Glenda P. Nabholz

Independence– Glenda P. Nabholz, 88, of Independence IA, died Friday, July 23, 2010, at Buchanan County Long Term Care Center in Independence following a short illness.

Glenda was born Oct. 1, 1921, in Independence, the daughter of Hugo J. and Anna Mae (Weston) Melka. She graduated from Independence High School in 1940 and married Homer L. Nabholz June 22, 1943. The couple farmed in the Westburg Township in Buchanan County until their retirement. Glenda was active member of the Wesleyan Church and Grace Evangelical Church and the Buchanan County Farm Bureau Women.

She is survived by three children: Carol (Robert) Fisher, Independence, Larry Nabholz, and Jay (Jennifer) Nabholz both of Waterloo; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and two sisters; Velma Nabholz, O’Brien FL, and Opal Hirsch, Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Homer in 2004, two brothers: Harry and Donald Melka and a sister Dorothy Schmidt.

Funeral services 10:30 AM Monday at Grace Evangelical Church, Independence; Pastor Mike Root officiated. Burial in the Wilson Cemetery, Independence. Visitation 1 to 5 PM Sunday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, and from 9 AM until services Monday at the church.
 

 Dr. John Gouldin

Storm Lake - Dr. John R. Gouldin DPR, age 67, of Storm Lake, died Friday, July 16, 2010 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

John Robert Gouldin, son of Robert E. and Ilah H. (Lister) Gouldin, was born at Cedar Rapids IA, June 25, 1943. He was a graduate of Cedar Rapids Washington High School. John began his college education at William Penn College at Oskaloosa, and later graduated from the University of Iowa. He received his medical degree from the Dr. William S. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. John faithfully served his country in the United States Navy from Sept.25, 1961, to Sept. 24, 1967. 

John married Cheryl A. Malmgren June 7, 1969, in Cedar Rapids, and this couple was blessed with four children: Shawn, Heidi, Holly, and Rachel.  Following their marriage, John and Cheryl resided on the Oakdale campus of the University of Iowa.  While he was obtaining his podiatric degree, they lived in Chicago, Forest Park, and Oak Park IL. He began his professional career at Elkader, where he and his family made their home for 16 years. In January 1995, Dr. Gouldin opened his practice in Storm Lake where he cared for his many patients until the last few weeks. 

John was a man with many varied interests, which included fishing, gourmet cooking, sailing, and skeet shooting. He is lovingly remembered for his jovial sense of humor and also as a man who was always eager to share his wealth of knowledge with others. John generously helped many people in need, both with his time and financial assistance. He possessed a literary talent and wrote many poems.  John was very committed to the communities he lived and worked in and believed in supporting them by doing his shopping and business “at home.”

John’s memory will be loved, honored, and cherished by his family which include his wife Cheryl of Storm Lake; his children: Shawn (Marie) Gouldin of Firth NE; Heidi (Walter) Long of Indianola IA; Holly (Adam) Espenhover of Columbus GA; and Rachel (Jason) Siegel of Ofallon MO; his grandchildren; his two sisters and their husbands: Sybil (Roger) Hunziker of Lake City FL and Rebecca (Richard) Goltermann of Lockport IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services were held at 10 AM Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at Fairview Cemetery in Winthrop IA. The Fawcett Funeral Home and Cremation services of Winthrop assisted the family with local arrangements.

Through July 31 - Civil War Quilts, presented by Iowa Masonic Library and Museum, Cedar Rapids. A 150-year retrospective. Monday - Friday, 8 AM-12 PM and 1-5 PM. Saturday tours available by appointment. Quilts made by Mary Belden of Westgate, Ellen Foland of Independence and Brother Roderick C. Ferry of Council Bluffs.  Quilts tell stories of Civil War and Underground Railroad.

Through August 10Grace United Methodist Church Vacation Bible School, in Lamont. The program will be every Tuesday from 6-8 PM at the church. This year’s theme is “Sailing the Seas with Jesus.”

2010 Summer Independence Back Pack Program needs volunteer businesses, groups and individuals to help assemble food  that registered kids can pick up each week. Come and join in preparing bags of food for the kids at First Presbyterian Church at 5 PM. Remember, that if the only meals some children eat are at school, what do they eat when they’re not in school? August 6-7 Lamont Days “Hollywood Comes to Lamont.” Steak fry, talent show, Terry German Softball Tournament, pedal pull, kid’s games. Parade 11 AM on Saturday and much more!

August 7 - During Lamont Days, Grace United Methodist Church Grilled Pork Loin Dinner at newly remodeled American Legion air conditioned building at south end of main street (Bush St., formally The Coach House) in Lamont. Grilled pork loin and brat sandwiches, corn on the cob, coleslaw, watermelon, pies and drinks. Serving just after the parade that begins at 11 AM.
