Mildred M.
Reichwald
Independence – Mildred
M. Reichwald, 95, of Independence IA, and formerly of
Waterloo IA, died Thursday morning, Feb. 25, 2010 at
Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a
short illness.
She is survived by a
daughter Susan (Mike) Ruffcorn, Independence, five
grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a brother
Erling Jensen, Spooner WI.
She was preceded in
death by her parents, and her husband Elmer Reichwald.
Memorial services will
be held at a later date; Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory,
Independence IA, is in charge of arrangements.
George F.
Gates
Independence
- George Frederic Gates Jr. was born Jan. 5, 1925, at
Independence IA, the son of George F. Gates and Margaret
Parker Gates. He attended country schools and Winthrop High
School where he graduated in 1942. George served his country
during WWII by entering the Navy in 1944 and serving as an
Aviation Ordinance Man until his honorable discharge in
1946.
George married Alberta
Hopf Sept. 30, 1945 at Congregational Church in Winthrop. To
this union were born three daughters: Nancy, Darcy, and
Tracy. The family farmed west of Winthrop for many years,
and George worked for the Iowa DOT as a Heavy Equipment
Operator for 25 years. After moving to Independence at
retirement, George continued to visit the farm as frequently
as possible.
George was a member of
the Church of Christ United in Winthrop, Winthrop American
Legion, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, and a member
of the Two Cylinder Tractor Club. He and Alberta enjoyed
traveling, camping, attending auctions, and collecting
antique tractors such as John Deere, J.D. Case, and Allis
Chalmers. He loved his dogs and always had one at his side
or riding with him in his red truck or tractor cab.
At 85 years of age,
George entered into his eternal rest on Saturday, Feb. 27,
2010, at West Village Care Center in Independence following
a short illness.
Preceding him in death
were his parents and sister Janice Weigel.
Survivors include his
wife Alberta, of 64 years, of Independence; his three
daughters: Nancy (Bob) Gates-Lee of Lighthouse Point FL;
Darcy (Jim) Fangman of Ste. Genevieve MO; and Tracy (Bill)
Reed of Marion IA; three step grandchildren and five step
great grandchildren; two sisters: Barbara (Chuck) Brigham of
Guemes Island WA and Harriet (Roger) Marshall of Mesa AZ;
one brother, Robert Gates of Puyallup WA; one brother-in-law
Clifford Weigel of Guemas Island WA; and nieces, nephews,
cousins, and friends. George is also survived by his loving
lap dogs, Leah and Robin.
Funeral services
Thursday, March 4, 2010, at 11 AM at Church of Christ
United, Winthrop with Pastor Dean Schlitter officiating.
Inurnment of his cremains will be in Wilson Cemetery at a
date to be announced next summer. Visitation 5 until 7 PM
Wednesday, March 3, at Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop and
after 10 AM Thursday at the Church of Christ United. A
Memorial Fund has been established.
Leona A.
Shaffer
Independence
– Leona A. Shaffer, 94, of Independence IA, died Wednesday
evening, Feb. 24, 2010, at Allen Memorial Hospital in
Waterloo IA, following a short illness.
Leona was born Dec. 17,
1915, near Colesburg IA, the daughter of George and Martha (Ackman)
Kuhlman. She was a 1934 graduate of Colesburg Consolidated
High School, and graduated from Cedar Rapids Business
College in 1936. She was married to Clarke Shaffer on March
22, 1938 in Cedar Rapids, and the family made their home in
Colesburg. At the age of 50, Leona returned to school at
Dubuque Beauty Academy. She operated a beauty salon in her
home for 20 years prior to moving to Independence in 1980.
She became a nurse aid and hairdresser at West Village Care
Center in Independence for 15 years prior to her retirement.
Leona was an active member of First United Methodist Church,
serving on many district and conference committees, as
church organist and a member of the choir.
She is survived by a
daughter Sherry (John) Pattison, Arlington, six
grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in
death by her parents, her husband, two daughters: Martha
Belle Sherer, and Bonnie Yurich, and five sisters: Dorothy
Kuhlman, Betty McFarland, Wilma Trigg, Arlene Cole, and
Marjorie Simpson.
Memorial services were
11 AM Saturday at First United Methodist Church,
Independence with Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. Inurnment
at 2:30 PM Saturday at Zion Cemetery, Colesburg. Visitation
4 to 8 PM Friday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in
Independence.
Alice Clementine
Neumann
Lamont
- Alice Clementine Popham was born Sept. 24, 1916 on a farm
near Lamont IA, the daughter of Arthur Clement Popham and
Olive Alice Weston Popham. She attended country school and
Lamont High School graduating in 1936.
Alice married Carl Lewis
Neumann June 10, 1950 at the Popham farm north of Lamont. To
this union were born four children: Sandra, Edwin, Russell,
and Robert. Alice worked as the head of the laundry
department at Strawberry Point Lutheran Home for over 34
years They made their home in Lamont all their married lives
until moving to Strawberry Point Lutheran Home in recent
years. Carl entered into his eternal rest Oct. 7, 2007 at
the age of 87.
Alice enjoyed growing a
large flower garden, spending time with her grandchildren,
collecting thimbles, knitting, crocheting , sewing and
cooking.
Alice entered into her
eternal rest Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010 at Mercy Hospice House
in Hiawatha following a lengthy illness. She was 93 years of
age.
Preceding her in death
were her parents, her husband Carl, one grandson Eric, one
brother Charles Popham and one sister Erma Davidson.
Survivors include her
daughter Sandra (Roger) Moorman of Lamont; three sons: Edwin
(Louise) Neumann of Cedar Rapids; Russell Neumann of
Sallisaw, OK; and Robert Neumann of Missouri Valley IA; 12
grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one sister Mildred
(John) Lindsay of Lamont, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services 11AM
Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 in the Grace United Methodist Church
at Lamont with Pastor Scott Hall officiating. A memorial
fund has been established for Alice.
Visitation 3 until 7 PM
Friday, Feb. 26, 2010 at Fawcett Funeral Home in Lamont and
after 10 AM Saturday at the church in Lamont.
Bonnie C.
Groesbeck
Independence
- Bonnie C. Groesbeck, 80 years old, of rural Independence
IA, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at Buchanan County Health
Center in Independence following a short illness. She was
born April 22, 1929, in Golden City MO, the daughter of
Charley Lee and Theora Bonnie (Browne) Blanchard. She
attended school in Missouri. In 1948, she and Cecil Dean
Nickell were married in Lamar MO. They divorced in 1971.
Then, she and Ed Yarrington were married in Las Vegas NV. He
preceded her in death in 1974. On August 4, 1980, she and
Alan Groesbeck were married at the First Baptist Church in
Jesup IA. In addition to caring for her family, Mrs.
Groesbeck owned and operated the Riverside Laundromat in
Independence. She was a member of the Cornerstone Foursquare
Church in Independence. In her younger years, Mrs. Groesbeck
enjoyed riding motorcycles and being out of doors. She was a
gardener and liked working puzzles.
Mrs. Groesbeck is
survived by her husband of 29 years, Alan, two daughters:
Debra (Lorne) Lee of Independence, and Tina (Earl) Steinbron
of Jesup, and stepson Alan Groesbeck of Independence; 14
grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She is also
survived by two brothers: Charley Lee Blanchard of Bakers
City OR, and Steadman (Jill) Blanchard of Joplin MO, and a
sister, Kay (Delno) Robertson of Columbia MO.
In addition to her
second husband, she was preceded in death by her parents,
three sons, and a great granddaughter.

Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, a Cornerstone Foursquare Church in
Independence, with Pastor Bill Black officiating. Burial 2
PM Friday, Feb. 26, at Buckingham Cemetery in rural Traer
IA. White Funeral Home of Independence was in charge of
arrangements. Visitation was 4-8 PM Thursday, Feb. 25, at
the funeral home.
Helen S.
Hansen
Independence
– Helen S. Hansen, 97, of Independence IA, formerly of
Norway and Newhall IA, died Tuesday morning, February 23,
2010, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a short
illness.
Helen was born June 8,
1912, in Anamosa IA, the daughter of Paul G. and Anna P.
(Greene) Lehmann. She was raised in Monticello IA, and
graduated from Washington High School, Cedar Rapids. She
married Otto Christian Hansen July 23, 1934 in Red Wing MN.
The couple farmed in Norway until their retirement in 1974
and moved to Newhall, living there until moving to
Independence in 2006.
She is survived by four
daughters: Carol Ann (Cliff) Bartlett, Whitney TX, Judith
Kay Hansen, Denver CO, Linda Marie (Bill) Neel, Georgetown
TX, and Mary Ellen (Francis) Bagby, Independence, nine
grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in
death by her parents, her husband Otto in 1979, a sister
Wilma Wetzel, and a brother George Lehmann

AM Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Walford IA with Rev.
David Mosher officiating. Burial at Norway Cemetery.
Visitation Thursday at the church in Walford.
George J.
Joens
Independence
- George J. Joens, Sr., 97 years old, of Independence IA
died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at East Towne Care Center in
Independence from natural causes. He was born Jan. 25, 1913,
the son of Johannes and Anna Helena (Lausen) Joens. On July
2, 1936, he and the former Lelia Mae Goudy were married at
the Little Brown Church in Nashua IA. She preceded him in
death in 2009. They farmed until retiring. Mr. Joens was an
active member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge #142 in Independence. He
and Mrs. Joens were also members of the Polka Club of
Northeast Iowa.
Mr. Joens is survived by
one son, George (Dixie) Joens, Jr., of Brandon, and Bonnie
(Thomas) Haes of Vinton. He is also survived by 12
grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, two great great
grandchildren, and a brother Alvin (May) Joens of LaPorte
City.
In addition to his wife,
he was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Patricia
Bumgarner, two brothers, and three sisters.
Graveside services will
be held at West View Cemetery in LaPorte City IA, at a later
date. White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of
arrangements.
