Dons drop Bucs in a close one

The East Buchanan Bucs traveled to Gilbertville Feb. 23, to take on the 9th ranked Don Bosco Dons. The gym was packed to capacity with not one empty seat forcing many fans to stand at the sides of the court.

David Monaghan won the tip giving the Bucs a try at offense.  The first quarter ended with a score tied at 11. The Bucs fought hard the second quarter and as a result the score was 29-27 Bucs. EB came out of the locker room after half with the same intensity as they had in the first half and at the end of the third quarter, the Bucs were up by one with a score of 42-41. The Bucs entered the fourth quarter still going strong but were out scored 19-16 in the fourth quarter to lose a heart-breaker 58-60.

Monaghan was lead scorer for EB with 23 points. Blake Goodenbour finished his high school basketball career with 14 points on the night. Brent Barth was close behind  with 12. Senior Craig Sperfslage on three points during his last high school game while Ross Cusick had four and Quinn Mueller had two.  Barth had five assists while Monaghan had seven.

Goodenbour pulled down 18 boards, padding his individual season rebounding record to 349  rebounds during the ‘09-’10 season. Monaghan was credited with 12 rebounds against the Dons. Barth, Sperfslage, Monaghan and Goodenbour were all each credited with a steal.
